Abstract: In applications, such as flight control actuation, robotics, and motor control, where high power is required and signal fidelity is not a primary concern, switching amplifiers can provide a highly efficient solution. Unlike linear power amplifiers, the amplifier output for a switching amplifier is either near the supply voltage or near zero. Continuously varying filtered output levels can be achieved by simply changing the duty cycle. This results in in efficiency being quite constant as output power varies when compared to a linear circuit. This presentation describes the basic working of a switching or a class D amplifier, and how it can be used to drive various high power reactive loads.
