[Legacy Report] Changing Generation Resource Mix Impacts on Power Systems
October 5, 2017 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm PDT
The generation fleet connected to and serving our electrical grid is changing. For the western U.S. power system, these changes include retirement of very large nuclear and fossil-fired generation plants. Another change is the increasing presence of renewable generation, including inverter-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) generation.
This presentation will focus on bulk power system characteristics and performance impacts due to these changes, including reduced fault currents and reduced stabilizing inertia. Discussion will include examples of traditional and newer technology solutions to mitigate the selected impacts presented.
