IEEE Computer Society – Building Engineering Excellence through Reading (BEER) Talk

October 24, 2023 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm UTC

Join the Seattle Chapter of the Computer Society as we get back into the swing of meeting in person. This meetup will be an informal guided discussion of ‘The Vision of Autonomic Computing’ by Jeffrey Owen Kephart (Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and David M. Chess. We’ll read sections of the paper aloud with prepared analysis, including information from historical context and related works. Starting at 5:30 pm we’ll have a half hour of networking over pizza and/or beer, followed by 15-20 minutes of guided discussion on the paper, then open floor discussion. You are encouraged to read the paper in advance, “https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?tp=&arnumber=1160055” and consider the framing questions: – What has changed in our industry in the 20 years since this paper was published? – Did we meet the goals of autonomic computing? – Does the advent of Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT) / Large Language Model (LLM) applications mean that there are eminent breakthroughs in autonomic computing? Come hypothesize about what forces conspired to push this paper to over 8k citations, and if we’ve yet to plumb the depths of autonomic computing. The event will not be recorded or streamed online, so feel free to bring your hot takes… within reason. Please note that this is a pay-your-own-way event. Attendees will be responsible for covering the cost of their own food and beverages. Bldg: RAZZíS PIZZERíA , RAZZíS PIZZERíA , 8523 Greenwood Ave N, Seattle, Washington, United States, 98103
