Dear Seattle Section Life and Senior Members, Many thanks to Joe Decuir for hosting the first 2025 Life and Senior Members gathering at his beautiful lakeside home in Redmond. Dr. Kumar Vijay Mishra Is ieee AESS distinguished speaker, Title: Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Radar and Communications Abstract: In recent years, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have shown promising abilities to control and manipulate electromagnetic (EM) waves through modified surface boundary conditions. These surfaces are electrically thin and comprise an array of spatially varying sub-wavelength scattering elements (or meta-atoms). Through careful engineering of each meta-atom, RISs can transform an incident EM wave into an arbitrarily tailored transmitted or reflected wavefront. RISs are being considered for future generation wireless systems and are already rapidly enabling novel applications in sensing and communications such as non-line-of-sight coverage, index modulation, polarization modulation, and adaptable patterns. This talk will explore applications of RISs to radar, wireless communications, and joint radar-communications. Toward the end, we will touch upon deep learning-based techniques for RIS inverse design. Please sign in using the email address tied to your Zoom account — not necessarily the one you used to register for the event.): https://sjsu.zoom.us/meeting/register/vo5r9OqaSFuqKsuFcww7Cg Synopsis: AR/VR devices promise a new era of immersive computing, where our everyday experience is augmented with helpful information (Augmented Reality), or where we are immersed in fully virtual worlds (Virtual Reality). These systems fuse the physical world and the virtual world through computing resources to provide these immersive experiences rendered on the user's headset. As a result, it allows new opportunities for attackers to compromise the security and privacy of users that are not well understood. Towards understanding the security and privacy challenges in these systems, this talk presents a number of recent attacks we developed on AR/VR systems. One threat model exploits the shared computing resources used by multiple applications on a headset to extract information through side channels; we show attacks that spy on user activity or compromise privacy. Another threat model exploits the shared state among multiple users in a multi-user application, allowing malicious users to inject compromised information or to recover information they are not allowed to access. Other threat models include those that interfere with applications and cause the virtual model to become out of sync with the physical world, causing user motion sickness or bypassing safety guardrails. Kumar Vijay Mishra (S’08-M’15-SM’18) obtained a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and M.S. in mathematics from The University of Iowa in 2015, and M.S. in electrical engineering from Colorado State University in 2012, while working on NASA’s Global Precipitation Mission Ground Validation (GPM-GV) weather radars. He received his B. Tech. summa cum laude (Gold Medal, Honors) in electronics and communication engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur (NITH), India in 2003. He is a Senior Fellow at the United States DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory; Research Scientist at the Institute for Systems Research, The University of Maryland, College Park under the ARL-ArtIAMAS program; Technical Adviser to Singapore-based automotive radar start-up Hertzwell and Boston-based imaging radar startup Aura Intelligent Systems; and honorary Research Fellow at SnT - Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust, University of Luxembourg. Previously, he had research appointments at the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Bengaluru; IIHR - Hydroscience & Engineering, Iowa City, IA; Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs, Cambridge, MA; Qualcomm, San Jose; and Technion - Israel Institute of Technology.
