Proactive inter-DER energy transfer session control plane option using IEEE 2030.5 Smart Grid on SIP stack. Reuse or reinvent: Distributed Energy Resources controls at scale The digital transformation of many connected Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) control plane endpoints around a distribution grid’s energy bearer plane has similar technical dimensions and challenges to those of the multimedia control plane’s digital transformation at scale. Distributed energy and distributed multimedia control plane architectures share key common technical dimensions that includes generation, storage, adaptation, and consumption. The presentation discusses a proposal of integrating the “Session Initiation Protocol” (SIP) a part of the Internet Protocol architecture layer, into the DER connected energy control plane. An example is provided to demonstrate an energy transfer session among connected DERs using SIP’s key features that includes capability discovery and negotiation, followed by a dynamic autonomous energy transfer session setup and teardown method. This energy transfer process occurs among multiple connected DER types of generation, storage, adaptation, and consumption. As a next step the presenter seeks a collaborative exploration by interested parties in the IEEE (Power Engineering Society) PES to help prove the value of the SIP protocol layer integration elements discussed in this presentation. The IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferrroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society (UFFC-S) Seattle Chapter was founded in March 2023. The Chapter aims to provide UFFC-S members with opportunities for professional and personal growth as well as network with the local, vibrant UFFC community. For our inaugural meeting our guest speaker will be Dr. Kai E. Thomenius. Dr. Thomenius has held industry positions in medical ultrasound since 1976 for several ultrasound companies, most recently GE Global Research where he was a Chief Technologist in the Imaging Technologies. He is currently an IEEE UFFC Distinguished Lecturer. Dr. Thomenius will present "Some Thoughts on Possible Ultrasound Futures." The meeting will be hybrid. EX EMERGE: A research and innovation initiative on connected and automated driving
IEEE VTS/ITSS and ITS Canada Joint Meeting EX EMERGE: A research and innovation initiative on connected and automated driving Fortunato Santucci University of L’Aquila, L’Aquila, Italy Abstract - In the challenging field of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) we present a multi-disciplinary research project (EX-EMERGE) that aims at developing and validating key technology enablers for advanced levels of automated mobility: vehicular communications, accurate and reliable positioning, machine learning for automated operations, multi-access edge computing architectures and security by design. We illustrate recent advancements in these research areas, along with a set of case studies, whose functional and performance requirements are tested in real scenarios. These case studies are deployed on experimental facilities that are available in our university research center thanks to a public-private partnership and to the support of national (Italian) and European agencies. Furthermore, we touch upon specific research directions in the area of mobile communication systems, including performance analysis and testing of cellular V2X interfaces based on LTE Mode 4 PC5 and 5G-NR Mode 2, along with 6G oriented paradigms such as non-orthogonal multiple access and intelligent reflecting surfaces. De-Carbonization of our National Bus Depots
Decarbonizing bus fleets presents both opportunities and challenges in the US, and globally. In this session, we will discuss the key opportunities and challenges associated with this endeavor. The top three opportunities for the transit industry are underpinned by a) environmental benefits, b) cost savings, and c) technological innovation. Decarbonizing bus fleets offers significant environmental advantages by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Furthermore, transitioning to electric buses could also provide long-term cost savings to the industry. It also creates opportunities for technological innovation and job creation. For example, the development and adoption of electric bus technologies spur advancements in battery storage, charging infrastructure, and energy management systems. This fosters economic growth, encourages research and development, and generates new job opportunities in clean energy sectors. The path to above strategic opportunities requires overcoming the challenges associated with infrastructure development, upfront costs, and charging range constraints. One of the significant challenges in decarbonizing bus fleets is the need for extensive charging infrastructure. Electric buses require an adequate network of charging stations, including both depots charging and on-route charging options. Expanding the charging infrastructure across the country requires significant investments and coordination among various stakeholders, including transit agencies, utility companies, and local governments. Electric buses also tend to have higher upfront costs compared to traditional diesel or natural gas buses. While the operational costs of electric buses are lower, the initial purchase price can be a barrier for transit agencies, especially those with limited budgets. Funding and financial incentives are necessary to support the transition to electric bus fleets and mitigate the upfront costs. Electric buses' range and charging time can present challenges for transit operations. The range limitations of electric buses may necessitate adjustments to routes, scheduling, and infrastructure planning. Efficient charging solutions must be implemented to minimize downtime and ensure the availability of charged buses during peak operational hours. Overcoming these constraints requires careful planning and collaboration between transit agencies and charging infrastructure providers. Addressing these challenges and leveraging the opportunities will be crucial in successfully decarbonizing bus fleets in the US, contributing to a more sustainable and cleaner transportation system.
