Join us for a session on microgrids. Find out how you can get an energy efficient, resilient, sustainable, low or no cost microgrid on your property by using power purchase agreements with the local power utility company and energy incentives and rebates. Microgrids are power generators that provide power to your facility or sell power back to the Grid. Using the IEEE 1547 Utility Interconnection, IEEE 2030 smart grid we work with your local power utility company to have revenue generating assets on your property which include wind, solar, geothermal, battery energy storage systems, hydro, and/or fuel cells. Working with our team partners we prepare a plan for which types of DERs (Distributed Energy Resources) are best for your situation. Connecting all the assets with a microgrid controller we are able to monitor, and track all your power needs and sell back any excess to the Grid. Get connected today! Be part of our team and help save the planet! Abstract: The interconnection of quantum devices via the Quantum Internet – i.e., through a network enabling quantum communications among remote quantum nodes – represents a disruptive technology. In fact, the Quantum Internet can provide functionalities with no counterpart in the classical world, such as advanced quantum security services, distributed quantum computing services characterized by exponential increase of the computing power, and new forms of communications. These functionalities have the potential of fundamentally changing the world in which we live, in ways we cannot image yet. The aim of the lecture is to provide the participants with a wide view about quantum communications and quantum networks, and the unique challenges for transmitting quantum information. For this, some marvels of quantum mechanics such as entanglement, no-cloning theorem and teleportation, will be gently introduced. Short Bio: Angela Sara Cacciapuoti is a Professor of Quantum Communications and Networks at the University of Naples Federico II (Italy). Her work has appeared in first tier IEEE journals and she received different awards, including the “2024 IEEE ComSoc Award for Advances in Communication”, the “2022 IEEE ComSoc Best Tutorial Paper Award”, the “2022 WICE Outstanding Achievement Award” for her contributions in the quantum communication and network fields, and “2021 N2Women: Stars in Networking and Communications”. She also received the IEEE ComSoc Distinguished Service Award for EMEA 2023, assigned for the outstanding service to IEEE ComSoc in the EMEA Region. Currently, she is an IEEE ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer with lecture topics on the Quantum Internet design and Quantum Communications. And she serves also as Member of the TC on SPCOM within the IEEE Signal Processing Society. Moreover, she serves as Area Editor for IEEE Trans. on Communications and as Editor/Associate Editor for the journals: IEEE Trans. on Quantum Engineering, IEEE Network and IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials. She served as Area Editor for IEEE Communications Letters(2019 - 2023), and she was the recipient of the 2017 Exemplary Editor Award of the IEEE Communications Letters. In 2023, she also served as Lead Guest Editor for IEEE JSAC special issue "The Quantum Internet: Principles, Protocols, and Architectures". From 2020 to 2021, Angela Sara was the Vice-Chair of the IEEE ComSoc Women in Communications Engineering. Previously, she has been appointed as Publicity Chair of WICE. From 2017 to 2020, she has been the Treasurer of the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group of the IEEE Italy Section. Her research interests are in Quantum Information Processing, Quantum Communications and Quantum Networks. —— Co-sponsored by: Pradeep Kumar ***CANCELED*** Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/436045

Microsoft Copilot can be utilized to automatically summarize meeting discussions and generate actionable items from a meeting. Understanding "who is speaking what and when" is a crucial component to make this magic work. This talk explores the processes involved in handling speech signals, focusing on speech separation, enhancement, automatic speech recognition (ASR), and speaker diarization. We will start with techniques for separating and enhancing speech to ensure clarity and quality. The discussion will then shift to multilingual ASR, addressing the complexities of accurately transcribing speech across various languages. We will conclude the talk with speaker diarization, which identifies and attributes speech segments to individual speakers, answering the critical questions of who is speaking and when. Please register for the event using the link provided below. No CEUs or PDHs will be offered for this event. Speaker(s): Dr. Sunit Sivasankaran Agenda: 5.30 pm to 6.00 pm. Networking & Dinner. 6.00 pm to 6.50 – Tech Talk Room: Room #1505, Bldg: Microsoft Building #99, Address: 14820 NE 36th St, Redmond, Washington 98052, Redmond, Washington, United States, 98052, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/442158 |

Date: October 31,2024 - 11 AM to 12:30 PM PST Topic: IEEE Guide for Distribution Grid Resilience Metrics Who Should Attend: Power system engineers working in electric utilities, system planners, researchers, policy makers and regulators. Speaker: Shikhar Pandey holds a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from NIT Patna, India, and a Master’s and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Washington State University Pullman. He is pursuing an MBA from Chicago Booth School of Business. Currently, he serves as Sr. Manager of DER Planning and Engineering at Commonwealth Edison (ComEd). He is the Chair of the IEEE Distribution Resiliency Task Force, Co-Chair of the IEEE Grid Flexibility Taskforce, and Technology Lead for the IEEE Industry Technical Support Leadership Committee (ITSLC). Agenda: Abstract for Talk by Dr. Shikhar Pandey, Sr. Manager DER Planning and Engineering, ComEd, and IEEE Distribution Resiliency Task Force Chair In the past decade, the global shift towards addressing climate change has highlighted the electric grid as a critical enabler in achieving net-zero emissions. Electrification demands from sectors like transportation and buildings rely heavily on a resilient, reliable grid—especially as extreme weather events, such as wildfires and hurricanes, increasingly challenge its stability. Ensuring continuous power during these events is crucial, both for maintaining infrastructure and minimizing disruption to daily life. As a result, stakeholders across governments, utilities, and regulatory bodies are focusing more than ever on policies and initiatives to enhance grid resiliency. However, a fundamental question arises: how do we effectively measure grid resiliency? Developing metrics that assess the grid's ability to withstand and recover from extreme weather events is essential to ensure progress. This talk will introduce a comprehensive resiliency metric framework, designed to evaluate the grid's performance in adverse weather conditions. The metrics fall under two categories: System Performance, which assesses the grid's ability to endure extreme events, and Operational Performance, measuring its recovery capacity. Through this framework, we can better understand, measure, and enhance the resilience of our electric distribution grid. Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/440558 |
