Electric Ferries Nova Scotia - Friday February 10, 2023, 12 pm PST – Live Stream Seattle Washington “As a coastal province located on Canada’s east coast, Nova Scotia is facing a climate emergency. In 2021, NS committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) by 53% below 2005 levels and to be net zero by 2050. In fall 2022, NS released its climate plan, with action items to get the province ‘off oil, off coal, and off gas’. Significant portions of the provincial economy are tied to the ocean sector, including fishing, aquaculture, international shipping, ocean tech research and development, and transportation. This represents a significant opportunity for GHG reductions by marine electrification, and economic benefits tied to this new technology. One of the first projects under development in the province now is a new passenger ferry route in the capital city of Halifax as part of the public transit system. Krista will provide an overview of the current status of this project, and the anticipated benefits and challenges of bringing electric ferries to the region. Nuclear Fusion has advanced significantly in the past 20 years from a university-driven, academic, government-funded field to a private, privately funded industry. Today there are more than 30 firms around the world with stated plans to build the world’s first power producing fusion power plant. These companies have raised over 5 billion dollars in private capital and in November 2021, private investment into fusion surpassed government funding into fusion for the first time in US history. Certainly, many of these firms will fail, due to the high risk, but if one firm succeeds it would offer the world a fundamentally new energy source. NLF Consulting was founded in 2018 to help investors understand the field of nuclear fusion. The firm assembles teams of fusion subject matter experts (mostly retired staff from academia, government laboratories and industry) to assess the quality of startup pitches on behalf of investors. NLF has worked with Honda, Westinghouse, the Naval Research Laboratory, and other organizations to navigate this space. In this talk, the founder of NLF will walk through the kinds of questions that investors ask when evaluating fusion as an investment opportunity and will lay out good resources (books, etc..) for outsider who are trying to get involved with this field. Join us for a lunch session on Clean Energy Fusion with Moein Borghei from Avalanche Energy. Fusion energy has been a long-held dream of not just scientists, but also the general public, as a clean, safe, and abundant energy source. Many academic institutions, national labs, and private companies have been and are currently working to generate more power than the amount needed to operate the device. Although progress was slow in the early 2000s, in recent years, the fusion industry has been revitalized and attracted nearly $3 billion in investment in 2022 alone. Avalanche Energy, a VC-backed start-up, is focusing on a novel fusion configuration known as the Orbitron. The Orbitron uses a voltage difference of hundreds of kilovolts to confine the fusion fuels, while co-confining electrons using a weak magnetic field. Unlike conventional power plant-sized fusion reactors, Avalanche Energy is developing a device the size of a lunch pail that allows for rapid testing, low investment, and modularity. Its potential applications are vast, from powering electric vehicles and spacecrafts to providing electricity to remote areas around the world. Additionally, a multi-kW power pack of this size can be used as a distributed generation unit in microgrids, eliminating the uncertainty of renewables and the emissions of fossil fuel-based generators.
