P2030.10 DC Microgrid standards development

August 14, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm PDT

Co-sponsored by: CAS04

“IEEE PES has developed 2030-series Smart Grid standards. There is a task group 2030.10, focused on low voltage DC microgrids. The customers are people who do not have access to AC power, or for who need a renewable/off grid alternative. The task group is wrestling with market needs, safety standards, and finding the right level of DC power to fit that market. It is likely that the work will result in a two part standard: “sDC” = standard existing low voltage DC practice (e.g. IEEE Smart Village); “mDC” = managed DC for power and communications. For mDC a power source communicates in-band with the load, which negotiates voltage and current. Some students are prototyping mDC systems: 12-48volts; up to 10A current, with in-band communications using CoAP.”
