GHTC 2012 is the IEEE flagship annual conference designed to gather together scientists, engineers, technology professionals, academics, foundations, government and non-government organizations, and individuals engaged in humanitarian work to discuss and develop solutions for present and future humanitarian needs. An international conference, we anticipate participants from all over the world to attend a program of invited talks, technical sessions, tutorials, exhibits, networking, and social activities.

Participation in GHTC 2012 is open to all technologists or organizations interested in applying technology to humanitarian goals and to non-technical individuals and organizations interested in learning about the application of technology to humanitarian challenges.

Join the Seattle EMC Chapter at the Museum of Flight for a free, half day educational seminar.  The afternoon starts with a complimentary lunch at 12:00 pm.  Speakers include IEEE EMC Society Distinguished Lecturer, Mark Steffka of General Motors and University of Michigan, and John Norgard of NASA-Houston and member of the IEEE EMC Society Board of Directors.  In the extended presentations about radiated and conducted emissions, you’ll learn tips and tools to increase your EMC design and test productivity – practical skills you can use on the job the next day!  Exhibitors will be on hand with tabletop displays showing the latest in EMC related products and services.   The Museum is open to attendees at the end of the event for self-guided tours until 6:00 pm.  There is NO COST to attend, but you MUST BE REGISTERED.  Click here for more information and to register.

The Seattle Section applied for a grant from the IEEE New Initiatives Committee.
The project was intended to allow members to earn access to the Xplore Member Digital Library.
The response has been underwhelming.  Several members started; only one may still be active.
Unless members step forward to take advantage of this program, I will propose that we terminate the project in October, send the remaining money back to IEEE with a report on lessons learned.

Josh Scotland of UW Seattle won our Seattle Section Student Paper contest with his paper on “Designing Accessible Textbooks Efficiently”  in the contest held on March 26 at Seattle University.  He went on to win the Northwest Area (OR, WA, AK) contest on April 2 in Pasco.  As winner there, he went on to compete and win the Region 6 (western USA) contest in San Francisco on August 19.

We are pleased to inform you that the IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC) 2011 planning is entering the final stages. This international conference is focusing on the research and development of advanced technologies for application to societal challenges.  The Paper submittal and review process has been successfully completed with over 150 papers submitted and reviewed.  Acceptance notices have gone out to the approved authors and plans are being made for presentations in Seattle.

If you are interested in humanitarian applications of technology, we strongly encourage your presence at the Conference. The Conference will be held October 30 – November 1, 2011 at the Renaissance Hotel in Seattle, Washington USA.
